Overall conclusion

Feminism conclusion ;

When I asked people “whether or not they consider themselves a feminist?”, the majority of them said no. This was the result I was expecting, statistics show that less than 10 percent of women in Britain (7percent) consider themselves a feminists. Surprisingly although many people did not consider themselves a feminists, many of them still believe that women and men should have equality. This proved the point I made that many people, can make the distinction between the purpose of feminism and what they actually do with in society. I was not sure about this question because I was worried many people would not answer honestly, because I am asking them this question and I am female. The third question I asked was, “are there still problems that women in society face?”, Many people felt that there was problems that women still face within society. The most common problem people mentioned was the gender wage gap, This was an expected answer as the gender wage gap is the main problem that many third wave feminists talk about in the media. There are a lot of studies for and against the gender wage gap, I would consider the wage gap a very minuscule problem when compared to other prevalent problems that many women are going through or living with. Another common answer for this question is, domestic abuse or representation. I think these problems are more prevalent and too more women, however these problems are not talked about as much as they should be. This is very interesting to me because it shows that many feminists are not doing a very good job in the media. The fourth question I asked was “do you think women in todays generation are happier?”. Everyone I asked said yes based on the point alone that women have more right then before. Statistics and facts show that that is false, more women are unhappier then before and the statistics on unhappiness continue to increase. This may not be completely linked towards feminism, however I do think it is interesting that although women have more rights then they did before. The right to have an education, not have an education, marry, not marry, vote etc they are still the unhappiest they have every been overall. If I base my final major project on feminism, I want to ask a lot of young girls why they think this is, and what may be making them personally unhappy if they are. Only one person I asked said that many women are dealing with self esteem and mental health issues. The fifth question was “what can be done to improve society for women?” The majority of the people I asked all mentioned that somehow the government should implement laws, to decrease the gender wage gap. No one mentioned any social change that could be done to improve society for women, although there are a lot of other problems that feminists mentioned thats are based on social opinions and stereotypes. The sixth question was “do you think 3rd way feminists are a good example for young/women?”, The majority of the people I asked either said no or they are a little bit. When I asked them why, they said because the feminists in the media I am assuming they are talking about, are very aggressive or hypocritical. However they do add diversity and encourage women to stay in school and get an education, which no one can deny is good. In conclusion the majority of people would not consider themselves a feminist, but they can see in parts of society where they have been useful for example the work industry and creating some social change.

Desensitization of society conclusion ;

The first question I asked was, “when did you first get a phone or a technological device?”. I got a variety of different answers, but overall the majority of people got a phone before they were 10. This was an important question to ask because, I wanted to see what ages children get to use technology. Most of the answers are very low, based on statistics if I asked much younger people  I would expect to get a lot lower numbers. The second question I asked was “do you have a social media account? “, Everyone I asked had a social media account. The most common type of social media apps that people used was Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat, WhatsApp and twitter. Another thing that was interesting was the point that everyone I asked, also had multiple social media accounts, more than four. The third question I asked was “do you use it frequently and how often?”, The majority of the people I asked used a social media app at least once a day. The fifth question I asked was “have you ever seen a fight video online?”, Everyone I asked said that they had and when I asked them the ages they first witnessed the video, some of them mentioned ages younger then when they had first been given a technological device. From that I am assuming that although some parents personally many not give their child access to the internet and technology, they will still be able to view inappropriate content somewhere else. For example in a public place or their friends device. The sixth question I asked was ” how did you feel when you watched it?”, many of the people I asked said that they found it entertaining to some extent or funny. This is an interesting point because it says something about human nature, do humans just naturally enjoy watching violent content, that could be why we have such a saturation of violent content, obviously because people enjoy watching it and it has a high demand. A very small percentage of the people I asked actually saw the videos as scary and shocking which is the response you would expect from most young children. some of them could have been dishonest. The eighth question I asked was “have you ever watched porn or seen pornographic content?”, Everyone I asked said yes, looking back I wish I asked them the age I assume it would be similar to the age when they saw violent content. The fact that everyone has seen some type of pornographic content, shows that google needs to add more restrictions to porn websites. The last question I asked was, “do you think their should be a restriction on the age that children have access to technology?”. The majority of people I asked said yes, because it is very easy to access porn, so therefore it is very likely that a young child might gain access to it. They also said that they may be targeted by online predators on social media apps. From the results it seems that many people’s lives are centres around their phones, and social media apps.

Political correctness conclusion ;

The first question I asked was, “do you think our society has become more sensitive”, Every person I asked said yes, one person said it did somewhat. But they were still able to recognise that the world has become more sensitive. The second question I asked was “Why”, There were multiple answers but they all similar, the most common answer was that there are a lot more people in our society who are emotional or take small problems very seriously, I personally agree with this and have also seen it first hand. Another common answer was that there are more people dealing with mental illness, statistically this is true 1 in 4 people in the Uk will experience a mental health problem, that is likely to be a lot higher when you consider that suicide is the 3rd highest leading cause of death, and that it is the leading cause of death for men. The third question I asked was have you ever heard someone say something bigoted ?, Every single person I asked said yes, they all mentioned a situation in their lives where someone they knew said something offensive or someone around them said something offensive. These results show that bigotry is very prevalent in society. The real question is what is considered offensive, and if something racist of homophobic is said in a casual/comical environment should be it excused. The 4th question I asked was “should people who say racist/homophobic speech etc. be prosecuted for doing so ? ” The majority of the people I asked this question to said yes, They all agree that saying either or the two speeches is something to be taken seriously however they do not think it should go to the extent of punishment by prison. I personally agree I am someone who agrees with free speech and the right to say and think what you want, and I am very consistent with my beliefs free speech means, free speech for all. Unless that people is consistent or violent I do not think any punishment should happen to them. One person mentioned that if the person is a Nazi they should be prosecuted because they are encouraging hatred. I personally think that Nazi’s should have the right to express their speech, I do not agree with what they are saying but they should also have the right to have protests and express their beliefs but without any violent action. The fifth question I asked was ” How should people who say hurtful or offensive remarks be punished if at all ? “, The all felt that prison was an extreme punishment however they felt that they should face some type of punishment for example community service, a fine and someone even mentioned house arrest. They acknowledged that this only applies to the most extreme racist, someone for example who is quite open with their beliefs. As there are many racist people who do not openly express racist views but make it obvious in other ways, such as with their demeanor towards others races/groups of people. The sixth question was “Do you think words like mankind and gentlemen are offensive? ” , This was a strange question to ask, is asked it purposely to see people’s reaction towards being asked it (trick question). Every single person I asked said they did not find those types of words offensive, This told me that the people who do find those words offensive are an extremely small group of people. No normal person would take it that seriously. The last question I asked was ” do you think social privileges should be allowed to minorities when it comes to speech? “, This is something that a lot white people complain about. Every single person I asked said No, I think a lot of people will say it is wrong but will act differently in reality. Most mentioned that it is very hypocritical and counterproductive that certain groups of people say words like queer or n… towards one another but get extremely offended if someone outside of that group says it also. They have to lead by example it is either you can or can not say it not in between.

Overall conclusion ;

Based on those interviews, I have decided to do further research on Feminism and Desensitization of society. Feminism because there are still a lot of questions I want answered such as why women are more unhappy then they were before. Desensitization because I find the topic very intriguing and it is something that is very prevalent today because of the use of social media and porn etc.
